Riverview Studios is Closed

This is a collective and tearful goodbye to to our little studio home. We found out that the house had to go up for sale, so with the rush of packing and cleaning, the fact that we needed to post that the space was closing went by the wayside. Each of the artists are going their own way as places become available. Perhaps some day we'll find ourselves together again. But, as arty things like these often are, we're more likely to find nests in different parts of the county…or quite possibly the country or world. Who knows? But until then, thanks to everyone who found our little corner of Riverview Drive.

Nearing the end of the 30 day challenge

Lou Belcher is nearly done with the 30 day painting challenge. Yes, disciplined and focused is definitely her natural state. Many of her fans are requesting that her work should be assembled together at the end for an adult coloring book, but I personally like how they look as bags or pillows as well as pieces set smartly in black frames and a crisp white mat. There's something smart about black and white. Lou has definitely tapped into echos of art nouveau and has inspired me to reexamine working  with black and white myself. Below is a small sample of the work done so far.

Lou Belcher's Whimsy

Anyone owning a cat is well familiar with the fact that anything enticing will soon wind up decorating the living quarters, and Lou takes this concept one step further. What would your tree look like if Kitty had her choice of ornaments? I vote for tissue garlands :3

And before we forget, Lou's two boys also provide a helpful public service message for any kitty tempted to add a rigorous tree climbing  session to their cat-ercize routine. Always always climb from the center of the tree.

Introducing Karen Chadbourne.

If you haven’t had a chance to check Karen Chadbourne’s (our newest artist) work I’d like to recommend that you take some time out to look. You can read her full bio here, but to summarize briefly, she’s a self taught impressionist artist specializing in oils but sometimes taking brief forays into whimsy and acrylic paints.

An excerpt from the “Before You Write” blog
kept by Lou Belcher

I don’t know how many of you have noticed that the original name of this blog is Before You Write.
In the beginning, this was my blog.

I was– or I should say, I am — writing a book containing information I hope will be helpful to would-be and advanced writers before they embark on a fiction or non-fiction book-length project.  To that end, I used to post about a variety of writing/editing topics  and then….  and THEN…

The Giveaway Koi After its Second Firing

After the second firing, the Koi looks a little more colorful and shiny. It's definitely ready to be given away at the end of the Riverview Holiday Open Studio 2015. If you'd like to check in for the event on facebook for a reminder, you can do so by clicking here. You can't win unless you attend (very bad takeoff on the Florida Lottery tagline to be sure).

Good luck to everyone and see you there!

“Electric Hummingbird” by Vanessa Bates

Sell Art OnlineA digital hummingbird sips at a trumpet flower shaped speaker for the sweet nectar of song. Yes, it's weird, but hopefully in a way that will make you smile. This image was created first by building and rendering 3D models in Lightwave before taking it to Photoshop and Illustrator to give the piece an appearance of being an Autocad drawing. An image of a camera lens patent is featured prominently in the background.

In the Company of Cats
Reposted from the Florida Book News

The following is an article as it appeared in the Florida Book News on Saturday, 7 November 2015, and is a more complete version of an earlier post.

In The Company of Cats is the story of two brothers (Knuckles and Bugsy) who start out as demolition cats and end up teaching lessons in loyalty and joy through their story.
You will laugh at their antics and shake your head at their persistence. In the end, you will learn some valuable lessons and may want to go out and adopt a cat or two of your own. Bugsy and Knuckles invite you to enjoy the story of their formative first year in their forever home with Lou Belcher.
If you liked Lou's first cat memoir, The Zen of Max (a memoir of great wisdom and many naps), this one will appeal to you also.

“Reclining Cow” (working title)
by Vanessa Bates

So what goes up must come down, but who's to say that there isn't a little resting involved before returning again? Yes, probably the cow in the rhyme only appeared to leap over a moon low in the horizon, but it might be fun to imagine a different interpretation.

Turtles Are In

Nancy Sadowski, always keeping apprised of the latest trends in interior decorating, says turtles are back in. So if you are coming to our opening on November 28th, you will have a variety of turtles from which to choose. I wish we had a photo of Nancy's latest piece to show you, but for now imagine sea turtle hatchlings crawling back to the sea with one exception…their cute, doe-eyed turtle eyes are looking at you. Yes, I'm not the writer in our group and can't do it justice in describing the piece. Let's say it's cute and you'll just have to come and see for yourself.
